Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe your experience with NEPA/SEPA compliance processes and how you ensure alignment with WSDOT policies during project development for Sound Transit initiatives.

In my previous role managing highway expansion projects, I led the NEPA/SEPA compliance for a $500M transit corridor development. I coordinated with federal and state agencies to prepare environmental impact statements, ensuring alignment with WSDOT’s right-of-way acquisition protocols and access management regulations. I implemented a cross-functional review process involving legal, environmental, and engineering teams to identify compliance risks early, which reduced permitting delays by 30% and ensured projects met federal and state standards.

Question 2: How do you oversee the production and approval of engineering drawings and documents for Sound Transit projects, ensuring they meet FHWA and WSDOT standards?

I establish rigorous quality assurance protocols, including peer reviews and use of BIM tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D to validate design accuracy. For example, on a recent light rail project, I mandated that all stamped drawings undergo a three-tier review: initial design team check, senior engineer verification, and final approval by a WSDOT HQ representative. This approach ensured 100% compliance with FHWA’s MUTCD standards and minimized rework during construction, saving 15% in project costs.

Question 3: Explain how you would develop strategies to enhance communication between WSDOT and Sound Transit stakeholders during complex project deliveries.

I would start by conducting stakeholder mapping to identify key internal and external players, then establish a structured communication framework. For instance, I implemented a monthly cross-organizational working group during a tunneling project, which included WSDOT engineers, Sound Transit planners, and community representatives. This ensured real-time alignment on design changes and traffic management plans, reducing conflicts by 40% and accelerating decision-making. I also use collaborative platforms like SharePoint for document sharing and regular progress dashboards to maintain transparency.
