Duties
As a CDL Skills Test Examiner, you will play a vital role in promoting roadway safety by ensuring commercial driver license (CDL) skills examinations are conducted fairly, consistently, and in compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. In this role, you will deliver professional, customer-focused testing services that provide every applicant with an equitable and positive testing experience. Using your expertise and sound judgment, you will evaluate candidates' driving abilities and ensure that only qualified applicants advance through the licensing process. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on public safety by helping ensure that commercial drivers possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to operate commercial vehicles safely and responsibly on our roadways.
Some of what you will do:- Ensure examinations support accurate license classifications, endorsements, and restrictions.
- Determine applicant eligibility and competency.
- Deliver equitable, professional, and customer-focused testing services.
- Maintain accurate and compliant licensing records and examination documentation to support timely and accurate CDL issuance.
- Support operational readiness of CDL testing locations by maintaining safe, secure, valid, and functional testing sites and work environments.
- Support statewide CDL testing operations through independent travel to assigned testing locations to assist with statewide testing needs as assigned.
Qualifications
What you will bring:
Five (5) years of experience conducting or evaluating state certified commercial driver license skill tests.
AND
Five (5) years of driving experience, two years of which must include driving class A vehicles.
A combination of up to two (2) years of relevant education and experience may substitute year for year for experience.
Experience must include:
- A valid Washington State class A Commercial Drivers' License.
- Two (2) years of customer service experience which includes explaining policies/procedures and state and/or federal regulations.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and web based applications.
- The ability to:

What may help set you apart:
- Experience in personal driver license training programs, scoring practices, or test administration.
- Experience with CDL training programs, scoring practices, or evaluating commercial driver skills training.
- Knowledge and experience in the operation of various types of commercial vehicles including Class A and Class B vehicles, with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
- Knowledge of Federal regulations (40CFR), Revised Code of Washington (RCW), Washington Administrative Codes (WAC), AAMVA standards and DOL policies and procedures regarding commercial driver licenses.
- Proven ability to conduct evaluations and make sound independent decisions in difficult or stressful situations or under pressure.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR 391.21) require that all applicants wishing to drive a commercial vehicle list all employment for the last three years. In addition, if they have driven a commercial vehicle previously, they must provide employment history for an additional seven years (for a total of ten years). Any gaps in employment in excess of one month must be explained.
Prior to new hire, a preemployment check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
In addition, an acceptable fingerprint based criminal history background check is also required for this position, as a condition of employment. Fingerprints will be used to check the criminal history records of the FBI. You will have the capability to review and challenge any record through the FBI.
Valid WA driver license or CDL without restriction.
The ability to travel statewide based on business needs.
